Tamarindo Adventure Tours: Kayak, Horseback, Waterfalls and Volcano

Adventure means different things to different people. For some guests it is their first time on a horse; for others it is wading through a river canyon to reach a hidden waterfall. When people ask our team which active tour suits them, we start with one question: how much effort do you want to put in? This guide answers it honestly for all the Tamarindo adventure tours we run.

Short answer: our active tours, from easiest to hardest, are the horseback ride (1 hour, no experience needed), the kayak tour in the estuary (2 to 2.5 hours of easy paddling with the tide), the Rincón de la Vieja and sloths and Llanos de Cortés full days (basic fitness), and the La Leona waterfall hike (river walking and possibly a short swim). This page covers only activities run by Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey.

Tamarindo adventure tours ranked by effort

  1. Horseback riding tour: $50 per person, 1 hour, minimum 2. Easy.
  2. Kayak tour in the estuary: $60 per person, 2 to 2.5 hours, minimum 2. Easy to moderate.
  3. Sloths and Llanos de Cortés Waterfall: $185 per person, full day, minimum 4. Easy to moderate.
  4. Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour: $180 per person, full day, minimum 4. Moderate.
  5. La Leona Waterfall Tour: $160 per person, 7 am to 3:30 pm, minimum 4. Moderate to demanding.

The rating describes effort, not risk. All tours are guided, and the guide adapts the pace to the group.

Horseback riding: easy

The Tamarindo horseback riding tour starts at the estuary, climbs nature trails to ocean viewpoints and finishes along the beach. It lasts 1 hour and the guide sets the pace for the whole group.

  • Fitness: no riding experience needed. Riders from 7 years old ride alone; younger children ride with an adult.
  • Honest note: if you have back, hip or knee problems, ask us before booking; even a calm ride involves sitting in the saddle for an hour.
  • Wear: long pants to avoid rubbing against the saddle.

Kayak mangrove tour: easy to moderate

On the Tamarindo kayak tour, you paddle into Las Baulas Marine National Park with the incoming tide, so the current works with you. Our guides time every departure with the high tide for exactly that reason, and we confirm the time by WhatsApp after you book.

  • Fitness: suitable for active beginners. You paddle in calm channels, with stops to watch birds, monkeys and iguanas, and a walk on land inside the park.
  • Safety: life jackets for everyone and a dry bag for your phone. Hands stay inside the kayak, because crocodiles live in the estuary.
  • Honest note: your arms and shoulders will notice 2 hours of paddling. If you prefer your own guide and pace, the private kayak tour costs $100 per person.

Sloths and Llanos de Cortés: easy to moderate

This full day combines a guided sloth tour with a visit to the Llanos de Cortés waterfall, about 2.5 hours from Tamarindo, plus a Costa Rican lunch. It leaves at 6:30 am and returns around 6 pm.

  • Fitness: short walks and easier access to the water than La Leona. Swimming in the pool is optional.
  • Honest note: the main effort is the long day and the time in the vehicle. Children 3 and under do not pay.

Rincón de la Vieja: moderate

The Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour takes you to an active volcano about 1 hour and 45 minutes away, with natural trails through dry forest and volcanic landscape. Transportation, entrance tickets, drinks and a Costa Rican lunch are included.

  • Fitness: a basic level is enough. Trails can be dusty, rocky or muddy depending on the season, with some ups and downs.
  • Honest note: the heat near the volcanic areas and the midday sun are often more tiring than the walking. Drink water often.
  • Bring: water shoes and tennis shoes.

Waterfall tour from Tamarindo: La Leona, moderate to demanding

The La Leona waterfall tour is the most adventurous day we offer. Instead of viewing a waterfall from a platform, you reach it on foot along a river and into a narrow canyon that opens onto a pool.

  • Fitness: basic fitness and good balance. The challenge is the terrain: river crossings, wet rocks and uneven ground.
  • Water: depending on the water level, the last stretch means wading or a short swim. You should feel comfortable where you may not touch the bottom.
  • Honest note: not a good fit for people with limited mobility, knee problems or fear of water. After heavy rain, access to the canyon may be limited for safety.

How to choose your adventure

  • With young children: the horseback ride or the boat tour; for full days, the sloth day is the easiest.
  • Active couples and friends: the kayak tour on a morning tide, plus La Leona for a real challenge.
  • Older travelers or limited mobility: write to us first. The shared boat tour of the estuary is often the most comfortable choice.
  • Short on time: the Estuary and Horseback Combo joins a ride and a boat tour in one outing.

Preparing for an active day

  • Drink water before you start; the Guanacaste sun is strong all year.
  • Use sunblock, a hat and repellent, and wear shoes that suit the activity.
  • Carry a change of clothes for the waterfall days.
  • Tell us about health conditions or fears when you book, so we can recommend the right tour.

Online you only pay the deposit, and the balance is paid in cash, in US dollars or colones, on the day of the tour. If weather makes a tour unsafe, we offer another date or a refund.

Ready for some adventure? Book the kayak tour, the horseback ride or the La Leona Waterfall Tour with Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey online. If you are unsure which level fits your group, write to us on WhatsApp and we will help you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Which of your Tamarindo adventure tours is the most demanding?

The La Leona Waterfall Tour. It involves walking along a river, crossing wet rocks and, depending on the water level, wading or swimming a short distance in a canyon to reach the waterfall.

Is the Tamarindo kayak tour hard for beginners?

Most beginners manage it well. The tour is timed with the high tide so the current helps you paddle, everyone wears a life jacket, and a walk on land inside the park gives your arms a break.

What is the easiest active tour you offer?

The 1-hour horseback riding tour. It is guided from start to finish, needs no previous experience and is open to riders from 7 years old, while younger children ride with an adult.

Do I need to know how to swim for the waterfall tours?

For La Leona you should feel comfortable in water that may be over your head for a short distance. At Llanos de Cortés, swimming in the pool is optional. If someone in your group does not swim, tell us before booking.

Do you offer zip lining or surf lessons?

No. Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey focuses on nature tours: the estuary by boat and kayak, horseback riding, turtle tours and full-day trips to waterfalls and Rincón de la Vieja.
