Choosing between shared vs private tours in Tamarindo is often the first real decision guests ask us about on WhatsApp, even before boat or kayak. The answer depends on how many you are, your budget and the kind of morning you want on the estuary.
At Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey we run both formats on the same estuary, so we see every day what each one does well. This guide does the math with our real prices and tells you honestly when a private tour is worth it.
Short answer: for couples, solo travelers and small families, shared tours give the best value: $40 per person on the boat and $60 per person on the kayak. A private boat ($800 for up to 10 or $1,200 for up to 16) only approaches good value with 8 or more people. The private kayak ($100 per person) is the private option that makes most sense for one or two.
Our shared and private estuary tours at a glance
- Shared Tamarindo boat tour: $40 per person, 2 hours, minimum 2. Bilingual guide, water, seasonal fruit and transportation from Tamarindo or Langosta.
- Private boat tour Tamarindo, up to 10: $800 per boat, 2 hours. Exclusive boat, bilingual naturalist guide, water, fruit, coconut water and beers if you like.
- Private boat tour Tamarindo, up to 16: $1,200 per boat, same inclusions.
- Shared Tamarindo kayak tour: $60 per person, 2 to 2.5 hours, minimum 2, with transportation in the Tamarindo area.
- Private kayak tour in Tamarindo: $100 per person, about 2.5 hours, from 1 person, with coconut water.
Boat tour price per person by group size
The shared boat is priced per person, so the cost per person never changes. Private boats are priced per boat, so each person pays less as the group grows:
- 2 people: shared $80 in total. Private for up to 10: $400 each.
- 4 people: shared $160. Private: $200 each.
- 6 people: shared $240. Private: about $133 each.
- 10 people: shared $400. Private: $80 each, $400 more for the group.
- 14 people: shared $560. Private for up to 16: about $86 each.
- 16 people: shared $640. Private for up to 16: $75 each, $560 more for the group.
With a small group, the private boat is a luxury. With 8 to 16 people, the extra cost is roughly $35 to $60 per person, and in exchange you get the boat to yourselves. For celebrations, see our guide to the private boat tour Tamarindo for groups; for market ranges, read Tamarindo boat tour price.
Kayak tour price: shared or private
Both kayak tours are priced per person, so the difference is always $40 per person:
- 1 person: the shared kayak needs a minimum of 2; the private kayak costs $100.
- 2 people: shared $120 in total; private $200.
- 4 people: shared $240; private $400.
Because the gap is fixed, the private kayak is a sensible upgrade for a couple or a solo traveler. A group of friends who simply want to paddle together usually enjoys the shared kayak just as much.
What stays the same on every mangrove tour
- The estuary and Las Baulas Marine National Park, with mangroves, birds, crocodiles, iguanas and monkeys.
- Departure with the high tide. The time changes daily and we confirm it by WhatsApp; see the Tamarindo tide schedule.
- Local bilingual guides. Sightings are frequent but never guaranteed, shared or private.
What our guides change on a private tour
On a shared tour, the guide balances the interests of everyone on board. On a private one, the whole tour bends around your group.
- Pace: the guide stops where you want, for as long as makes sense within the tour.
- Attention: questions from children, photographers or birdwatchers get full answers.
- Atmosphere: only people you know on board, which matters at celebrations.
- Extras: coconut water on the private boat and private kayak, and beers on the private boat if you like.
