When you book a boat or kayak tour with Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey, you will notice that we do not list a fixed departure time. The reason is the Tamarindo tide schedule: our estuary tours leave with the high tide, and the tide arrives at a different hour every day. This guide explains how the tides work, why they matter so much in the estuary and how we confirm your exact tour time.
How the Tamarindo tide schedule works
On the Pacific coast of Costa Rica the sea rises and falls twice a day. The pattern is regular and predictable, but it does not repeat at the same clock time:
- Two high tides and two low tides in a normal day.
- About six hours between a high tide and the next low tide.
- About 50 minutes later each day. If high tide is at 8 am today, it will be close to 9 am tomorrow and close to 10 am the day after.
- Stronger tides around the full and new moon, and gentler tides around the quarter moons.
That is why a tour that left at 8 am last week may leave at 1 pm this week. The tour is the same; only the clock changes.
Why the Tamarindo estuary tide matters
The Tamarindo estuary is where the river meets the ocean, inside Las Baulas Marine National Park. Its mangrove channels are shallow, and the difference between high and low water changes the landscape completely. At low tide, wide areas of mud and sand are exposed and many channels become too shallow to navigate.
Boat tours
The boat needs enough depth to enter the mangrove channels and travel safely into the park. With the high tide we can go deeper into the mangrove, closer to where herons, crocodiles, iguanas and monkeys live, and still return without trouble. The shared boat tour lasts 2 hours and always follows the high tide, as do the private boat tours.
Kayak tours
For kayaks, the tide is even more important. We coordinate the kayak tour with the high tide so the current helps you paddle into the park and makes the trip easier. Paddling against a strong outgoing tide would be tiring and much less enjoyable.
The estuary and horseback combo
The estuary and horseback combo includes a boat section, so its total length also varies with the tide.
Tours that do not depend on the tide
The turtle nesting tour departs at 5:30 pm, the sunset turtle release departs at 3:30 pm and our full-day trips have fixed schedules. If you want a plan with a set hour, see our day trips from Tamarindo.
How booking works with the tide
- Choose your tour, date and number of guests on our website and pay the deposit online.
- We check the tide for that day and confirm the exact departure time by WhatsApp.
- The shared boat tour includes transportation from Tamarindo or Langosta, and the kayak tour includes transportation in the Tamarindo area. If you come on your own, we send you the meeting point by WhatsApp when we confirm your booking.
- On the day of the tour, you pay the balance in cash, in US dollars or colones.
If you cancel at least 24 hours in advance, we refund your deposit. If the weather or water conditions make a tour unsafe, we contact you to offer another date or a refund.
Why we do not publish a tide table
Tide tables are easy to misread, and the best time for a tour also depends on the strength of each tide and the conditions of the day. Instead of asking you to calculate it, we confirm the right time for your date directly with you. It is simpler and avoids mistakes.
Tips for planning around the tide
- Keep the tour day flexible. Avoid fixing other plans until we confirm your departure time.
- Tell us about commitments. If you have a surf lesson, a dinner reservation or a flight, mention it when you book and we will tell you whether the tide fits.
- Book early in high season. From November to Easter, days with convenient tide times fill up faster.
- Combine your week wisely. When the high tide falls at an inconvenient hour, that may be a good day for a full-day trip or the horseback ride.
- Bring the basics. Sunblock, a hat, repellent and water shoes are useful at any hour.

Frequently asked questions
Why don't you show a fixed time for the estuary tours?
Boat and kayak tours leave with the high tide, which comes about 50 minutes later each day. We check the tide for your date and confirm the exact time by WhatsApp after you book.
Can I do the boat tour at low tide?
No. At low tide the mangrove channels are too shallow for the boat to enter Las Baulas Marine National Park safely, so we always plan the tour around the high tide.
Do the turtle tours and day trips depend on the tide?
No. The turtle nesting tour departs at 5:30 pm, the sunset turtle release at 3:30 pm and the full-day trips have fixed schedules.
What happens if the weather is bad on my tour day?
If the weather or water conditions make the tour unsafe, we contact you to offer another date or a refund.
