Tamarindo Combo Tours: Two Experiences in One Outing

Many of our guests have only a few days in Tamarindo and want to see as much as possible without spending the whole trip in a van. That is what our combos are for: two experiences joined in one outing, with one pickup, one guide team and one price. This guide explains the Tamarindo combo tours we run and how to combine single tours across several days around the tide.

Short answer: Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey offers two combos. The Estuary and Horseback Combo costs $80 per person (minimum 2) and joins a beach ride with a guided boat tour of the estuary. The Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour costs $180 per person (minimum 4) and is a full day at the volcano with transportation, entrance tickets, drinks and lunch included.

Tamarindo combo tours at a glance

  • Estuary and Horseback Combo: $80 per person, minimum 2, deposit $20 per person. Length varies with the tide. Includes a bilingual guide, bottled water, seasonal fruit and transportation from Tamarindo or Langosta.
  • Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour: $180 per person, minimum 4, deposit $60 per person. Departure between 6 and 7 am, return at about 6 pm. Children 3 and under do not pay.
  • Sloths and Llanos de Cortés Waterfall: not called a combo, but it joins a sloth tour and a waterfall in one day. $185 per person, minimum 4, from 6:30 am to about 6 pm.

The boat and horseback combo in Tamarindo

This is the combo our team runs most often, because it covers the coast and the mangrove in a single outing. You see the ocean from the viewpoints, ride along the beach and then enter Las Baulas Marine National Park by boat.

How the combo works, step by step

  1. Pickup at your hotel in Tamarindo or Langosta. Farther areas have an extra transportation cost, paid to the driver.
  2. Horseback ride from the estuary along nature trails up to viewpoints with panoramic ocean views.
  3. Ride along the beach with the sea breeze, always at the pace the guide sets for the group.
  4. Change to the boat at Las Baulas Marine National Park, where the boat is waiting.
  5. Guided boat tour through the estuary to look for birds, iguanas, monkeys and crocodiles, and learn about the mangrove.

Because the boat needs the high tide to enter the channels, the start time changes every day. We confirm it by WhatsApp after you book.

Why choose the combo instead of two separate tours

Booked separately, the shared boat tour ($40) and the horseback ride ($50) cost $90 per person. The boat and horseback combo Tamarindo costs $80 per person, with a single deposit of $20 instead of two. You also save a second pickup and fit both activities into one part of the day.

Who it suits and what to wear

No riding experience is needed. Riders from 7 years old ride their own horse, and younger children ride with an adult; for the boat, children follow the rules of the boat tour. Wear long pants for the saddle, and bring sunglasses, a hat, sunblock, repellent and a camera. Our Tamarindo horseback riding guide explains the ride in detail.

The Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour

Here the word combo means something different: everything for a full day inland in one price. The Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour takes you to one of the active volcanoes of Costa Rica, about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Tamarindo.

  • Round-trip transportation and entrance tickets
  • Bottled water, beers and juices for kids
  • A Costa Rican lunch (casado)

It requires a minimum of 4 people and a basic level of fitness for natural trails. Bring water shoes and tennis shoes. For the volcanic landscape, the schedule and the fitness level, read our guide to the Rincón de la Vieja tour from Tamarindo.

How to combine tours across several days

Beyond the combos, many guests build their own mix. The key is that boat and kayak tours follow the high tide, which arrives a little later each day, while full-day trips and night tours have fixed times. A few rules our team uses when planning with guests:

  • Do not pair a full-day trip with an evening tour. The Rincón de la Vieja and sloth days return around 6 pm, after the 5:30 pm turtle tour pickup and the 3:30 pm sunset release departure.
  • Use tide-timed tours to fill half days. A morning estuary tour leaves the afternoon free for the beach or the turtle tour in season.
  • Leave one flexible evening if you book the turtle tour, in case it needs to be rescheduled.
  • Check group minimums. Full-day trips need at least 4 people; most local tours need 2.

Example: three days with combos

  1. Day 1: the Estuary and Horseback Combo at the tide of the day, then the sunset on the beach.
  2. Day 2: the Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour, leaving early and returning around 6 pm.
  3. Day 3: a free morning, then the turtle nesting tour at 5:30 pm in season, or the Sunset and Baby Turtle Release from November 12.

Booking your combo

Each tour is booked online with its deposit, and the balance is paid in cash, in US dollars or colones, on the day of the tour. If you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, the deposit is refunded. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and if weather makes a tour unsafe we offer another date or a refund.

Frequently asked questions

What Tamarindo combo tours do you offer?

We offer the Estuary and Horseback Combo ($80 per person, minimum 2) and the Rincón de la Vieja Combo Tour ($180 per person, minimum 4). The Sloths and Llanos de Cortés Waterfall day also joins two experiences in one full day.

Is the boat and horseback combo cheaper than booking both tours?

Yes. The shared boat tour costs $40 and the horseback ride $50, a total of $90 per person, while the combo costs $80 per person and includes pickup from Tamarindo or Langosta.

How long does the estuary and horseback combo last?

The length varies with the tide, because the boat part needs the high tide to enter the mangrove channels. We confirm the start time for your date by WhatsApp after you book.

Can I do the turtle tour on the same day as a full-day trip?

Not with the Rincón de la Vieja or sloth days, which return around 6 pm, after the 5:30 pm turtle tour pickup. Plan the turtle tour for a day when you only have a tide-timed tour or a beach day.

Can children join the combo tours?

Yes. On the Estuary and Horseback Combo, children follow the rules of each tour: from 7 years old they ride their own horse and younger children ride with an adult. On the Rincón de la Vieja Combo, children 3 and under do not pay.
