3 Days in Tamarindo: A Nature Itinerary

Three days is a good amount of time to see the best of Tamarindo without rushing: enough for the beach, the mangroves, sea turtles and one big day inland. This Tamarindo itinerary comes from Tamarindo Estuary Tours Mi Rey, a local tour operator on the Tamarindo estuary, and it is built around the detail many visitors forget when they plan: the tide.

Short answer: spend day 1 on the beach and the estuary, timed with the high tide; day 2 on a full-day trip to Rincón de la Vieja, La Leona or the sloths; and day 3 on a kayak or horseback ride plus the sunset. In turtle season, add a night turtle tour on day 1 or day 3.

Before you plan: tides, seasons and timing

  • Tides set the estuary schedule. Boat and kayak tours leave with the high tide, which arrives a little later each day. We confirm the exact time by WhatsApp after you book; our guide to Tamarindo tides explains the pattern.
  • Full-day trips have fixed times. They leave between 6 and 7 am, so give them a day without an estuary tour.
  • Turtles are seasonal and nocturnal. The nesting tour leaves at 5:30 pm; check the best time to see turtles for your dates.
  • Your arrival day counts. Most visitors arrive by road from Liberia or San José, so plan a light first afternoon. See getting to Tamarindo.

Tamarindo itinerary: 3 days, day by day

Day 1: Beach, estuary and sunset

Start with a walk on Tamarindo beach and breakfast in town. Then join the shared boat tour ($40 per person, 2 hours) at the high tide of the day. It is a gentle first outing: crocodiles, herons and iguanas from the boat, and a short walk in the dry forest to look for howler monkeys. If high tide falls in the afternoon, enjoy the beach in the morning instead.

End the day watching the sunset from the sand. In turtle season, this is a good night for the turtle nesting tour ($60 per person), which picks you up in Tamarindo at 5:30 pm and goes to Playa Minas or Playa Jesús. If no turtles are seen, we reschedule for the next night, which is a good reason to book it early in your stay.

Day 2: A full day inland

Choose one of three trips, all with round-trip transportation, entrance tickets, drinks and a Costa Rican lunch:

All three need a minimum of 4 people. For Rincón de la Vieja and La Leona, bring water shoes and tennis shoes. Plan an early dinner; it is a long day. Compare the options in day trips from Tamarindo.

Day 3: Paddle or ride, then a sunset release

For your last full day, pick an active morning:

From November 12, finish with the sunset and baby turtle release ($50 per person), which departs Tamarindo at 3:30 pm. Avoid booking it on the same evening as the nesting tour, since the two overlap.

5-day variant

With two more days, slow the pace and leave room for experiences that need flexible dates:

  1. Day 1: beach, estuary boat tour at high tide and sunset.
  2. Day 2: full-day trip to Rincón de la Vieja.
  3. Day 3: free morning on the beach; turtle nesting tour at night in season.
  4. Day 4: a second day trip, to La Leona or the sloths, or the Ostional arribada tour ($130 per person, minimum 4) if an arribada is expected. The main arribada season runs from August to December, with peaks from September to November and smaller ones possible from May; ask us on WhatsApp about the next expected arribada.
  5. Day 5: kayak or horseback in the morning and the sunset release in the afternoon.

Traveling as a group of 8 or more? Swap the shared boat for a private boat ($800 for up to 10 people, 2 hours) and the guide will adapt the pace to your group.

Practical tips for this itinerary

  • Book turtle tours and full-day trips first; they have more limits on dates and group size.
  • Keep cash for the balance of each tour, paid in US dollars or colones on the day of the tour.
  • Pickup in Tamarindo and Langosta is usually included; farther areas such as Hacienda Pinilla, Conchal or Flamingo have an extra cost paid to the driver.
  • Pack water shoes, light clothes, sunblock, repellent and long pants for the ride.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Tamarindo?

Yes. Three days cover the beach, the estuary, a turtle tour in season and one full-day trip inland. With five days you can add a second day trip or the Ostional arribada when one is expected.

Which day should I do the estuary tour?

Any day without a full-day trip. The boat and kayak tours leave with the high tide, so the time depends on the date; we confirm it by WhatsApp after you book.

Can I do the estuary tour and the turtle tour on the same day?

Usually yes, as long as the high tide falls in the morning or early afternoon. The turtle nesting tour picks you up in Tamarindo at 5:30 pm.

What should I do on my arrival day?

Keep it light: settle in, walk the beach and watch the sunset. Leave tours with fixed early departures, such as full-day trips, for the following days.

Should I book my tours before arriving in Tamarindo?

It helps, especially for turtle tours and full-day trips, which have limited dates and a minimum of 4 people on day trips. You pay a deposit online, and it is refunded if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance.
