A Costa Rica honeymoon can mean volcano views in the morning and a Pacific sunset in the evening, and the hardest part is deciding what to leave out. We take many newlyweds out on the Tamarindo estuary, and the couples who look most relaxed are usually the ones who left room for slow mornings. This guide shares what we have learned from those couples: when to go, how to divide your days and which experiences in Guanacaste are worth your time together.
Short answer: for a relaxed Costa Rica honeymoon, fly into Liberia (LIR), stay at least five nights on the Guanacaste coast and, if you have ten days or more, add two or three nights in a volcano or cloud forest region first. On the coast, our most private experience for two is the private kayak tour ($100 per person), and our favorite sunset plan is the baby turtle release ($50 per person).
Planning a Costa Rica honeymoon: three decisions first
When to travel
The dry season, December to April, brings the most sun to the North Pacific, along with high-season demand. The green season, May to November, is quieter and lush, with showers that usually fall in the afternoon, and it is the main season for sea turtles. Our guide to the best time to visit Costa Rica compares the months.
How many bases
One base for a week, two for ten days. Every change of hotel costs half a day on the road, which is time you could spend together on a beach.
Where to fly in and out
Liberia airport is about an hour to an hour and a half from Tamarindo. San José often has more flights but sits several hours from the Pacific beaches. Ending your trip on the coast and flying home from Liberia keeps the last day calm.
Costa Rica honeymoon itinerary: 7 days in Guanacaste
- Day 1: land in Liberia, transfer to Tamarindo and watch your first sunset over the Pacific.
- Day 2: no alarms. Sleep in, swim and walk the beach at low tide.
- Day 3: private kayak tour at high tide, just the two of you and your guide.
- Day 4: a free day, or a day trip inland if a group is forming on your date.
- Day 5: estuary and horseback combo: ocean viewpoints on horseback, then the mangrove by boat.
- Day 6: sunset and baby turtle release, or a night turtle nesting tour in season.
- Day 7: a last swim and the drive to Liberia.
With ten days, add two or three nights in the interior before day 1, as in our Costa Rica itinerary for 10 days.
Honeymoon ideas for two in Guanacaste
A private kayak through the mangrove
On the private kayak tour in Tamarindo, you paddle into Las Baulas Marine National Park with your own bilingual guide and no other travelers. It lasts about 2.5 hours, timed with the high tide, and includes coconut water, fruit and transportation in the Tamarindo area. Early tides bring soft light and the calmest water; our guides often hear howler monkeys before they see them.
A sunset with baby turtles
The sunset and baby turtle release departs from Tamarindo at 3:30 pm and includes a contribution to the turtle conservation project. You help hatchlings reach the sea, following the rules of the project, as the sky turns orange. It is available from November 12.
Horses, viewpoints and a boat
The boat and horseback combo in Tamarindo ($80 per person) starts with a ride along nature trails to ocean viewpoints and the beach, then continues with a guided boat tour of the estuary. Its length depends on the tide.
A day with nothing planned
The most underrated honeymoon idea. Leave at least one full day without tours, reservations or alarms.
What a honeymoon week of tours costs
- Private kayak: $200 for two (deposit $20 per person).
- Estuary and horseback combo: $160 for two (deposit $20 per person).
- Sunset and baby turtle release: $100 for two (deposit $10 per person).
Total: $460 for the couple, with $100 paid online in deposits and the balance in cash, in US dollars or colones, on each tour day. The night turtle nesting tour adds $60 per person. A private boat is priced per boat ($800 for up to 10 people), so for two it is a splurge rather than a good deal; our guide to romantic things to do in Tamarindo explains when it makes sense.
Practical tips for honeymooners
- Boat and kayak times follow the tide and change every day; we confirm yours by WhatsApp after you book.
- Pickup in Tamarindo and Langosta is included where stated; farther areas pay an extra transportation cost directly to the driver.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before departure and the deposit is refunded.
- Pack repellent and sunblock; the best sunset spots are on the beach. More ideas in our guide to Tamarindo sunset tours.

How many days do we need for a honeymoon in Costa Rica?
Seven days is enough for one relaxed base on the beach. With ten days or more, you can add a volcano or cloud forest region before ending at the coast.
What are good honeymoon ideas in Guanacaste?
Popular ideas include a private kayak tour through the mangroves, a sunset with a baby turtle release, a horseback ride along the beach and a day with no plans at all. All of them are close to Tamarindo.
Can a couple join the full-day trips on their own?
Our full-day trips require a minimum of 4 people. Write to us on WhatsApp with your date and we will tell you whether a group is forming or suggest another plan.
Can you help us plan a surprise during our honeymoon?
Yes. Send us your idea and dates on WhatsApp, and we will suggest the tour and time that fit best. Boat and kayak times depend on the tide, so planning ahead helps.
