Tamarindo in October asks for a different kind of trip. It is usually the wettest month of the year in Guanacaste, so you plan around the weather instead of ignoring it. In return, you get the quietest beaches of the year, mangroves at their fullest and two turtle seasons overlapping: the arribada peak at Ostional and the start of the leatherback season at Playa Grande.
Short answer: October is usually the rainiest month in Tamarindo and the quietest for tourism. Rain can fall for long periods, but many days still have dry hours, often in the morning. Estuary tours run all year with the high tide, the Ostional arribadas are at their peak and the leatherback season begins, although leatherback sightings are now rare. Choose October if you are flexible, and keep a buffer day for weather changes.
Tamarindo weather in October: the wettest month
In most years, October brings the most rain to the Pacific coast of Guanacaste. Compared with September, the showers last longer, the sky stays grey for more hours and storms are frequent.
There are still sunny spells, and some mornings are perfectly clear. But in October a whole day of steady rain is a real possibility, especially during a temporal.
Tropical storms in the Caribbean can also have an indirect effect: in some years they pull moisture across the country and bring several days of heavy rain to the Pacific side. Rural roads can become muddy or temporarily difficult, which mainly affects longer drives. For the full green season, see our guide to the Tamarindo rainy season.
Costa Rica in October: the quietest time of year
October has no national holiday that fills Tamarindo. Hotels are at their calmest, some businesses close for a few weeks or reduce their hours and the beaches can feel almost private.
This has one practical consequence for tours:
- Shared tours need a minimum of 2 people. If you travel with a partner or friends, that is never a problem.
- Solo travelers can still go out: the private kayak tour starts from 1 person, and we can tell you by WhatsApp which shared departures already have guests.
- Group tours to Ostional need 4 people, so it is worth contacting us early.
Tamarindo in October: two turtle seasons at once
Arribada peak at Ostional
October sits in the middle of the arribada peak, which usually runs from September to November. Thousands of olive ridleys can come ashore over several days, roughly once a month, but the turtles decide the start. We follow each arribada and confirm the departure by WhatsApp.
Leatherback season begins
In October the leatherback season starts at Playa Grande, inside Las Baulas Marine National Park. An honest note: the population has declined sharply, and seeing a leatherback is now rare. During the season, access to the nesting beach of the park is restricted to protect the species, so our night tour goes to Playa Minas or Playa Jesús. Read more in our guide to the turtle nesting tour at Playa Grande.
Baby turtle releases on our sunset tour are available from November 12.
What our guides see on the estuary in October
After weeks of rain, the river carries more fresh water and the channels run higher and browner. The mangroves are dense and the dry forest is so leafy that monkeys are often heard rather than seen.
October is a strong month for birds: northern migrants are present in good numbers, and shorebirds gather on the mudflats when the tide drops. Crocodiles are in the estuary as in every month. Under cloudy skies they tend to stay in the water, so our guides scan the surface for eyes and nostrils as the boat moves.
How rain and tides affect tours in October
- Boat and kayak tours leave with the high tide, which changes every day. We confirm the time by WhatsApp after you book and tell you if the forecast suggests a better day.
- Light rain does not stop the tour. With lightning, strong storms or unsafe water, we wait, offer another date or refund the deposit.
- Ostional depends on the arribada and on the road; the partly unpaved route can take longer after heavy rain.
- Night turtle tours leave at 5:30 pm. Rain on the beach is unpleasant but not dangerous; lightning is a reason to wait.

A flexible plan for an October trip
- Book your key tour early in the trip, so there is time to move it if the weather turns.
- Leave one buffer day without plans in the middle of your stay.
- Check the tide times we send you and prefer the morning departures.
- Keep a rainy-afternoon plan: a long lunch, a rest before a night tour or a walk in town.
What to pack for Tamarindo in October
- A proper rain jacket and a small towel.
- Quick-dry clothes and water shoes that drain; leave heavy cotton at home.
- A waterproof phone case or zip-lock bags (a dry bag is included on kayak tours).
- A spare set of dry clothes for after the tour.
- Insect repellent, plus dark clothing for turtle tours.

Frequently asked questions
Is October a good time to visit Tamarindo?
It is a good time for flexible travelers who want empty beaches, a green landscape and turtles. October is usually the rainiest month in Guanacaste, so plan outdoor activities around the dry hours and keep a buffer day.
Do boat tours run in Tamarindo in October?
Yes. Estuary boat and kayak tours run all year with the high tide, and light rain does not usually stop them. If the weather or water conditions make a tour unsafe, we offer you another date or a refund of the deposit.
Can I see leatherback turtles in October?
The leatherback season at Playa Grande begins in October, but sightings are now rare because the population has declined sharply. Our night nesting tour goes to Playa Minas or Playa Jesús, where olive ridley and black turtles are seen most often.
I am traveling alone in October. Can I still book a tour?
Yes. Shared tours need a minimum of 2 people, which can be harder to reach in the quietest month, but the private kayak tour starts from 1 person at $100 per person. Write to us on WhatsApp and we will tell you which shared departures already have guests.
Is the Ostional arribada tour possible in October?
Yes, October is within the peak of the arribadas, which usually runs from September to November. The date of each arribada depends on the turtles, and the road can be slower after heavy rain, so we confirm the plan by WhatsApp.
