If you are flying to Guanacaste from the United States or Canada, you will most likely land at Liberia, at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR). Searching for Costa Rica tours from Liberia is a natural first step, and it helps to know how the area works before you book anything. We are a local, family-run operator on the Tamarindo estuary, not at the airport, and this page explains honestly how to plan tours when your trip starts at LIR.
Short answer: Liberia airport is about an hour to an hour and a half by road from Tamarindo. Our tours pick up in the Tamarindo area, not at the airport, so the usual plan is to transfer to Tamarindo on arrival and book your tours from there. The volcano and waterfalls near Liberia are covered by our full-day trips, which include round-trip transportation from Tamarindo.
Things to do near Liberia airport
The airport sits on the plains of Guanacaste, between the volcanic range and the Pacific coast. The best-known places in the area are:
- Rincón de la Vieja National Park: an active volcano northeast of Liberia, with steam vents, boiling mud pools and forest trails.
- La Leona waterfall: a river and canyon walk in the foothills of the volcano, in the Curubandé area.
- Llanos de Cortés waterfall: a wide fall with a sandy pool near Bagaces, south of Liberia.
- The city of Liberia: the provincial capital, with a central square, local restaurants and shops.
- The Gulf of Papagayo: beaches and bays to the west of the airport, such as Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa.

Costa Rica tours from Liberia or from Tamarindo?
Here is how our tours work, so you can decide where to stay:
- Estuary boat tour: transportation from Tamarindo or Langosta is included.
- Kayak tours: transportation in the Tamarindo area is included.
- Turtle nesting tour: pickup in Tamarindo at 5:30 pm.
- Sunset and baby turtle release: departure from Tamarindo at 3:30 pm, from November 12.
- Full-day trips: round-trip transportation is included, with departures from Tamarindo.
We do not offer airport pickups or airport transfers. To get from LIR to Tamarindo you can take a shared shuttle, a taxi, a private transfer, a rental car or, the slowest and cheapest option, public buses through the city of Liberia. Our guide on how to get to Tamarindo compares them.
If you are staying in Liberia or near the airport, write to us on WhatsApp before booking. Pickup outside the Tamarindo area is not always possible, and when it is, it has an extra transportation cost paid directly to the driver.
Plan your tours around your flights
From watching many guests arrive tired after a long travel day, this is the order we recommend for a stay of four nights or more:
- Arrival day: clear immigration and customs, transfer to Tamarindo and keep plans light. If you reach Tamarindo by early afternoon, the sunset and baby turtle release ($50 per person, departs 3:30 pm) can fit; otherwise, watch the sunset from the beach.
- First full day: the Tamarindo boat tour through the mangroves of Las Baulas Marine National Park, $40 per person for 2 hours. It leaves with the high tide, so we confirm the time by WhatsApp after you book; our Tamarindo tides guide explains why.
- Middle of the stay: a full-day trip back toward the Liberia area, to the volcano or a waterfall. These leave early and return in the afternoon or evening.
- An evening in season: the turtle nesting tour, with pickup in Tamarindo at 5:30 pm.
- Departure day: leave plenty of time to drive back to LIR and avoid booking anything with a fixed time.
Costa Rica excursions toward the Liberia area
The interior of Guanacaste is where the airport is, and also where the volcano and the best-known waterfalls are. All three of our full-day trips include round-trip transportation, entrance tickets, bottled water, beers, juices for kids and a Costa Rican lunch (casado), with a minimum of 4 people:
- Rincón de la Vieja combo: $180 per person, departure between 6 and 7 am, return at 6 pm.
- La Leona waterfall tour: $160 per person, 7 am to 3:30 pm. Expect to walk in the river and get wet.
- Sloths and Llanos de Cortés: $185 per person, 6:30 am to about 6 pm.
Children 3 and under do not pay. Compare the three in day trips from Tamarindo.
Liberia or San José: which airport for Guanacaste?
If your plans are centered on Guanacaste beaches, Liberia is the practical choice: the coast is close and you save a long drive. San José often has more flight options, but the road trip to Tamarindo takes several hours, so many travelers spend a night near the capital first. If you want to combine both regions, flying into one airport and out of the other can save time. Our Costa Rica 10-day itinerary shows how to build a trip around Guanacaste.
Practical tips for LIR arrivals
- Keep WhatsApp working: we confirm tide times and pickup details by WhatsApp, so plan for a data plan or Wi-Fi on arrival.
- Carry some cash: online you pay only the deposit; the balance is paid in cash, in US dollars or colones, on the day of the tour.
- Book the key tours ahead in the high season, from December to April, when many flights arrive.
- Drive in daylight if you rent a car, since rural roads have little lighting.
